Michele Nizzi is the women’s reigning D.A.R.E. Run champion in Herkimer. She has also won back-to-back women’s Freedom Run titles in Little Falls. Because of a shift in the schedule, one of those crowns will go to someone else for 2010.

A later start to Little Falls’ Canal Celebration has pushed the 30th annual Little Falls Lumber Co. Freedom Run 10-kilometer run and two-mile run and walk back a week on runners’ calendars to the same spot already occupied by Herkimer’s 15th annual D.A.R.E. five-kilometer run and walk. The change leaves some runners with a decision they not previously have to make about a Saturday morning destination.

Nizzi, who could not be reached Friday afternoon for an indication of her running plans, ran the 10-kilometer Freedom Run in 40:47 last Aug. 8 and placed seventh overall in a field of 62 runners. Seven days later she completed the D.A.R.E. Run in 20:35 and took 12th place out of 205 total finishers.

David Putney of Newport is the defending Freedom Run 10-kilometer champion, having beaten three-time winner Ty Remington to the finish line last year. Little Falls high schoolers John Bladek and JoAnna Douglas were first-time winners in last year’s two-mile race.

Kyle Heath of Syracuse ran a course-record time of 15:32 to win the D.A.R.E. Run by more than three minutes last year.

Nizzi was one of several runners who competed at both events last year and the scheduling conflict, along with the Ilion Marine Corps League’s benefit walk- and ride-a-thon for Jesse Schofield, is bound to cost each event a few entries. The D.A.R.E. Run had 205 runners and walkers complete the course last year, down from 265 in 2008, while the Freedom Run’s two races had a total of 116 entries.
