The South Washington Street Bridge project is winding down, but work is not expected to be completed until the latter part of November, according to Jim Piccola, public information officer with the New York State Department of Transportation, Region 2.
Piccola said according to Matt Miller, project manager, crews are working on some rebates at the ends of the bridge with some paving required at each end as well as navigation lights on the bridge, which spans the Mohawk River and Erie Canal between the village of Herkimer and State Route 5S.
“They take time,” said Piccola. “He (Miller) thinks it will definitely be toward the latter part of November.”
Tioga Construction, of Herkimer, has the contract for the work on the bridge deck and surfaces as well as replacing the guide railing to meet current standards. The completion date is listed as Nov. 30 on the DOT website. The project is being paid for with state and federal funds.
The bridge has been closed since July 25 and drivers are directed to State Route 28 and State Route 5 as part of a signed detour.
The cost of the rehabilitation project will be less than $1 million, while replacing the bridge would cost an estimated $5.5 million, Steve Emrich, a DOT civil engineer, said previously. He said the project will extend the service life of the bridge through replacement of the concrete surface and railing, and steel and sub-structure repairs.
The section of the Erie Canalway Trail near the bridge and the canal have remained open during construction.
