Herkimer clinched a spot in the championship bracket of the Mohawk Valley Fastpitch Softball League playoffs with a pair of wins Monday at David P. Whalen Community Park.
Herkimer entered the final night of the regular season in a tree-way tie with Ilion and St. Johnsville/Oppenheim-Ephratah atop the standings for the eight-team league. By beating Poland 9-6 and Dolgeville 17-0, Herkimer closed out the regular season with a 6-1 record in round robin play and earned a spot among the top four for next week’s playoffs.
Ilion (4-1), St. Johnsville/Oppenheim-Ephratah (4-1), Little Falls (3-2) and Mohawk (3-2) all played later Monday with the other three championship bracket spots up for grabs.
Herkimer jumped on Poland early, scoring three runs in the first inning and two in the second on the way to building a 9-2 lead. Rachel Waseleski hit a sinking line drive to left field for a triple to start the offense in the second inning.
Left-hander Sarah Schumske stood out in the second game. She struck out all nine batters she faced in a game that was stopped after three innings.
While Herkimer closed out a strong showing for the regular season, Frankfort saved its lest for last. Winless through three weeks of play, Frankfort defeated Dolgeville 8-1 and Poland 9-4. Jamie Zipko was 2-for-2 with a walk and scored twice in the first game.
Dolgeville (2-5), Frankfort (2-5) and Poland (0-7) will all play in the lower playoff bracket with games at 5:30 and 6:45 p.m. Monday. The championship bracket includes semifinals at 8 p.m. and first- and third-place games at 9:15 p.m.
