HERKIMER 19, SAUQUOIT VALLEY 3
The Herkimer Magicians rolled through the quarterfinals of Section III’s Class C-1 playoffs Wednesday, beating Sauquoit Valley 19-3 to avenge a loss from last year’s semifinals.
The Magicians, seeded third, await the winner of Thursday’s game between Herkimer and Cato-Meridian. They would host a semifinal Saturday against Cato-Meridian and would play on the road should Little Falls win. Herkimer and Little Falls split two decisions during the regular season with each winning on the other’s home field.
Three Herkimer hits led to two quick runs in the first inning Wednesday. Shellbi Morris doubled, McKenzie Pine singled and both scored ahead of a Brianna Parks double.
One hit was all it took for the Magicians, seeded third, to score five more times in the second inning. With the bases loaded, one out and one run already in, Sauquoit Valley pitcher Shania Taylor hit three consecutive batters to force runs across the plate. Shannon Cool added a sacrifice fly for a 7-0 lead.
The Indians had missed a chance to score in the top of the second. With runners at first and second and one out, Cool struck a batter out for the second out and catcher Lindsey Parese picked a runner off second to end the inning.
Sauquoit Valley got a run in the third when Jordan Talma led off with a hit and came around to score but the Magicians kept adding to their lead.
Taylor struggled with her control throughout the game, walking 10 batters and hitting six. Magician Joy Williams was hit three times by Taylor’s offerings.
Parks reached base five times with three hits and two walks; she scored two runs. Morris had two hits and scored three runs and Parese had two hits and two runs scored. Pine, Megan Ball, Bianca Aceto and Maxine Grogan all scored twice.
Jenna Mazza had two of the five hits for Sauquoit Valley.
Cool struck out seven batters, walked two and hit one.
Prior to the game, Kathryn Dolly and Alexa DiSpirito, two freshmen from Herkimer County Community College’s NJCAA Division III national championship softball team, threw out the ceremonial first pitches. Dolly, a 2012 Herkimer High School graduate, starred for the Magicians last year when they undefeated in the regular season and earned a No. 1 playoff seed. DiSpirito graduated from West Canada Valley High School in 2011 and transferred to Herkimer this year after not playing during her first year of college.
