The Mohawk village board has decided to deny the Central Valley Central School District’s request to use Weller Park as a spillover area for fall sports practices, according to Mayor Jim Baron.
Baron said board members discussed the matter after Monday’s meeting and decided not to grant the request.
“With the schools merged, it is the board’s opinion and my opinion that there is ample field space in the area,” Baron said during a telephone interview Wednesday afternoon. He added that the park is owned by village taxpayers.
“The park should be available to taxpayers; they should not have to do things around school activities.”
Jim Humphrey, athletic director for the Central Valley school district, approached the board about using the park during Monday’s meeting. The purpose would be to make sure there was enough field space for the middle school level teams in Mohawk rather than having to transport the student athletes to fields in Ilion. He said the need for space in the park would only be likely to occur a couple of times a week and the school would maintain the park during the season and make any needed repairs.
The village board’s next regular meeting is scheduled for Sept. 9.
