The notoriously private Angelina Jolie became an inspiration when she opened up about her preventive double mastectomy. Now, Jolie's doctor Kristi Funk has spoken out in praise of the actress' decision.
As reported by People, Funk told Los Angeles Magazine that Jolie "waited to find the perfect timing in her personal and professional life, but I think most importantly in her soul," to talk about her choice. "She is intensely private, but she calculated the moment when she would be ready to reveal something so personal."
According to Funk, it was Jolie's selfless nature which inspired her to share her decision. "She knew always that in her philanthropic core she couldn't keep this a secret and be who she is," Funk said. "She always knew."
Funk credits Jolie's candid op-ed piece on raising awareness of breast cancer and the different options available. "When someone who is arguably the most beautiful woman in the world removes the part of her body that is symbolic of femininity and sexuality, you have to say, 'Why would she do that?'" Funk said.
