A former Rochester police captain accused of killing his son in Old Forge last summer has rejected a plea offer.
Herkimer County District Attorney Jeffrey Carpenter said Monday his office received word that the offer of three to nine years in state prison for pleading guilty to second-degree manslaughter proposed to Michael Leach earlier this month was rejected.
Leach, 59, now will go to trial on Monday, Nov. 18, facing a second-degree murder charge based on allegations that he intentionally shot to kill what he believed was an intruder in his Clarks Beach Motel room the night of July 21, 2012. He told police that he only later discovered that the person he shot in the dark was his own son.
Leach, who was a part-time officer with the Perry Police Department at the time of the incident, faces a minimum of 15 years to life in prison if found guilty of murder.
