ASTON, Pa. — Little Falls native Martha Staring scored the winning goal in overtime Saturday and the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan College opened their 2013 season with a 2-1 victory over Stevenson University.
Playing at Neumann University, the Marlins got the tie-breaking goal from Staring, who now resides in Royersford, Pa., with 1:21 left to play in overtime. Freshman Asiah Allen assisted on the senior’s game-winner.
Stevenson had led 1-0 at halftime and Virginia Wesleyan tied the game with Taylor Lober’s goal in the second half.
Virginia Wesleyan started its season with a win for the first time since shutting out the College of Wooster 4-0 in 2003.
The Marlins added a 4-2 victory Sunday against Neumann. Staring contributed an assist as they came back from a 2-0 deficit.
