  • HERKIMER, N.Y. — Improved goalkeeping and offensive contributions from a trio of area players led the Herkimer County Community College Generals through a pair of opening-weekend wins at the Coliseum Classic.
The Generals shut out Division I Sussex County Community College 3-0 Saturday at Wehrum Stadium then defeated Holyoke Community College 4-2 Sunday afternoon. Holyoke is ranked fifth in the NJCAA’s preseason Division III poll.
The tandem of West Canada Valley’s Kalli Warmingham and Dolgeville’s Julia Jaikin got the season off to a fast start for the Generals. Warmingham, starting in her collegiate debut, took a shot that deflected to Jaikin for a goal 26 seconds into Saturday’s opener.
Danielle Nicosia added a goal on a direct kick from 35 yards out in the 14th minute and Herkimer led 2-0 at halftime. Emily Rexford completed the scoring with a goal assisted by Kelsey Bean late in the second half.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kristi Bills made 20 saves in the shutout of Sussex while Lorraine Macaluso countered with 23 stops for the Skylanders.
“The thing that saved us all weekend was Kristi Bills in the goal,” coach Amy Dommer said of the former Western Athletic Conference standout from Northville. “She made huge saves to keep us in both games. That was a huge difference from last year to this year.”
Bills came through again Sunday with 13 more saves as the Generals broke away from a 1-1 tie in the second half and defeated Holyoke’s highly-ranked Cougars.
Warmingham put the Generals on the board first with a goal assisted by former West Canada Valley teammate Jennie Maxwell. Holyoke tied the game on a Tashla Lopez goal 15 minutes into the second half and the score remained deadlocked for the next 10 minutes.
Rexford broke the tie with a goal assisted by Warmingham and a short time later Zaira Pabon scored with an assist form Dolgeville’s Kaitlyn Lyon. Lyon capped the Herkimer scoring with a goal of her own assisted by Nicosia to put the Generals up 4-1 with 2 1/2 minutes left to play.
Nicole Collini had a late goal for Holyoke.
The Generals played on the road Tuesday at Onondaga Community College and return home for a match Thursday against Genesee Community College.
