ALFRED, N.Y. — The Herkimer County Community College Generals split decisions Saturday as they opened play at Alfred State’s Pioneer Classic.
The Generals defeated Butler County Community College 2-1 and Mercyhurst North East 2-0. They were beaten by Jamestown Community College and the tournament’s host school. The day started with a 25-15, 25-19, 19-25 win against Butler in pool play followed by a 25-20, 12-25, 25-18 loss to Jamestown. Alfred State defeated Herkimer 25-20, 12-25, 25-18 in the semifinal round on its way to winning the tournament championship. Herkimer was a 25-22, 25-17 winner against Mercyhurst North East in the third-place match.
Alfred State defeated Jamestown 25-22, 25-21 in the best-of-three championship match. Pioneer Kay Pfleghardt was the tournament’s most valuable player.
Kayla Barber recorded 39 kills, 17 blocks, 34 digs and three aces for Herkimer and represented the Generals on the tournament’s all-star team. Brynn Hlozansky had 41 digs, 21 kills and 10 blocks, Zara Hyde had 71 assists and 19 digs, Paola Vazquez had 34 digs, Cristen Davis had 32 digs and Dolgeville’s Ashley Mettler had 20 kills, a block, 27 digs and three aces in her collegiate debut.
The Generals next play Sept. 11 at Mohawk Valley Community College.
