Merle R. Lawson, 71, of state Route 8, died on Sept. 3, 2013, at his home.
Merle was born on July 19, 1942, in the town of Ohio, a son of the late George and Lucy (Nightengale) Lawson. He received his education in local schools and enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard in 1963. Merle served in the Army National Guard for six years and was honorably discharged at the rank of SP5 in 1969. In his early years, he worked as a self-employed trucker and was first married to Carol Farber. He later worked at tanneries in Middleville and Gloversville. Merle was united in marriage with Roberta D. Potter on Dec. 17, 1988, at the Ohio United Methodist Church. He was last employed for Suit-Kote for six years, from where he retired.
Survivors besides his wife, Roberta, include three sons, Michael Lawson and his companion, Tina Maury, Randy Lawson and his wife, Jacquelyn, and Patrick Lawson and his wife, Miyoung, all of Cold Brook; one daughter, Danielle Lawson and her companion, Eric Livzey, also of Cold Brook; a sister, Janet Dutcher, and a brother, James Lawson and his wife, Barbara, all of the town of Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Lisa Lawson, of Poland; a step-daughter, Jennifer Colburn, of Rome; 13 grandchildren, including a special grandson, Jace Reel; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Frederick, and a step-son, Michael Colburn.
A graveside service will take place at Ohio Cemetery on Saturday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Richard Chrisman officiating. Military honors will be conferred by the Military Forces Honor Guard. Calling hours at the Autenrith Funeral Home, Newport, are Friday from 4 to 7 p.m.
