  • BOYS' SOCCER: Mt. Markham to play for Optimist Tournament title

  • WEST WINFIELD, N.Y. — The Mt. Markham Mustangs got two goals each from Devan Palmer and Kris Pontero Friday when they defeated Camden 7-2 in the first round of the the Optimist Tournament in West Winfield.
    Vernon-Verona-Sherrill shut out Central Valley Academy 6-0 in Friday’s other match. The Mustangs and Red Raiders play in the championship match Saturday at 7:15 p.m. The consolation match is Saturday at 430 p.m.
    Pontero had an assist in addition to scoring two goals. Davide Delia and Matt Bleaking each had a goal and an assist, Ivan Delia scored a goal, and Jake Allen, Brady Wheelock, Josh Roys and Connor Thompson each contributed an assist. Mike Gras made seven saves for the Mustangs who led 3-1 at halftime.
    Baily Dickson had a goal and an assist for Camden and Josh Spencer scored the other goal. Andrew Hill made 11 saves.
