Herkimer County Community College will host a 9/11 remembrance ceremony at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the main flagpoles, outside the Ronald F. Williams Library Building. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be in the amphitheater in the Robert McLaughlin College Center.
President Ann Marie Murray will deliver the welcome and Matthew Powers, instructor of English, will be the faculty speaker. Chief Joseph Malone of the Herkimer and Mohawk Police Departments will speak on behalf of the community. The student speaker will be sophomore Adam Lisser, a veteran of the war in Iraq and currently serving with the New York National Guard.
The Newport Volunteer Fire Department and West Canada Valley American Legion Post No. 1524 will host its annual Patriots Day/Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the Newport Volunteer Fire Station at 7370 Main St.
Participating in the ceremony will be local fire departments, area veterans groups, EMS providers, law enforcement agencies, municipal officers, elected officials, school students and members of the community.
The West Winfield 9/11 memorial observance will take place at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11, in the Mount Markham High School auditorium. Presented by American Legion Lt. Walter J. Will C.M.H. Post No. 1058, the observance will include music by the Remnants.
