  • FIELD HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Magicians beaten by Golden Knights

  • HERKIMER, N.Y. — The Holland Patent Golden Knights struck quickly Monday and defeated Herkimer’s Magicians 3-1 on the road.
    The Golden Knights tallied a goal 70 seconds into the contest and a second goal prompted a Herkimer timeout after less than 13 minutes of play.
    Alyssa Curtis opened the scoring with the first of her two goals. Curtis lifted a shot from near the edge of the circle and the deflected off the stick of goalie Samantha Spanfelner on its way into the cage.
    Curtis, who finished the game with two goals an an assist, hit the post with a backhand shot from the middle of the circle a short time later then set up a Faith Babrowicz goal on a breakout. Herkimer had failed to score on a penalty corner and the Golden Knights played the ball out on a 16-yard hit. Curtis led the charge down the field and got the ball to her teammate for the second goal of the game.
    Adrienne Lyon assisted on Curtis’ second goal for Holland Patent.
    Christine Kudrewicz scored for the Magicians (1-1-0) with an assist from Krista Green.
    Goalie Leanna Newland was credited with nine saves for Holland Patent while Spanfelner had four for Herkimer. Herkimer is home again Wednesday for a game against Little Falls.
    LITTLE FALLS 2, VERNON-VERONA-SHERRILL 0
    LITTLE FALLS, N.Y. — Goalie Kristi Torres made 12 saves Monday and the Little Falls Mounties shut out Vernon-Verona-Sherrill 2-0 in their home opener at Veterans Memorial Park.
    The Mounties (2-1-0) scored one goal in the first half and added another in the second. Ashley Fox scored first seven minutes into the game off an assist from Sydney McCarthy. McCarthy added a goal assisted by Sara Kotary 4:02 into the second half.
    Torres’ play in the cage helped the Mounties overcome a 12-8 Vernon-Verona-Sherrill edge in shots. After allowing eight shots in the first half, the Mounties limited the Red Devils to four in the second.
    “Our strength is we can generate some offense,” Little Falls coach Monica Tooley said, “but we have to remember to stay at home on defense.”
    Little Falls had five corners to Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s two.
    Kasey Palmer made six saves for Vernon-Verona-Sherrill.
    The Mounties are on the road Wednesday for their Center State Conference East Division opener against Herkimer.
    CENTRAL VALLEY ACADEMY 3, ONEIDA 0
    ILION, N.Y. — The Central Valley Academy Thunder defeated Oneida 3-0 Monday at Barringer Elementary School.
    Sammy Hyde, Paige Rowland and Madeline Kenny scored goals for the Thunder (2-1-0) and Makayla Donato contributed an assist.
    Central Valley Academy had a game Tuesday against Morrisville-Eaton/Hamilton and plays Friday at Clinton.
    MT. MARKHAM 1, NEW HARTFORD 1, tie
    Page 2 of 2 - WEST WINFIELD, N.Y. — The Mt. Markham Mustangs played New Hartford’s Spartans to a 1-1 overtime tie Monday.
    Mt. Markham led 1-0 at halftime on Lizzie Jones’ Siena Allen-assisted goal.
    Sarah Thomas had the tying goal for New Hartford.
    Amanda Otis had two saves for the Mustangs (2-0-0) while Mackenzie Holbert had four for the Spartans.
    Mt. Markham was a 3-0 winner in junior varsity play.
    The Mustangs play at home Wednesday against Clinton.
