WATERVILLE, N.Y. — The Little Falls Mounties defeated Herkimer in the second round of a shootout Satutrday to claim third place at Waterville’s Brothertown Optimist Tournament.
The teams were tied at 1 at the end of regulation and remained deadlocked at the end of two 10-minute overtimes despite a 39-1 Herkimer shot advantage. The goals were scored 20 seconds apart one minute into the second half. Chris Lyndsey scored for Herkimer 58 seconds into the period and Kyle Rowe was credited with the equalizing goal for Little Falls.
The first round of penalty kicks failed to break the tie as each team converted once. Cooper Malanoski, Matt Jodway and Kyle Barnes were successful in the second round as Little Falls won 3-2.
Little Falls is home Tuesday for a match against Old Forge. Herkimer plays at Westmoreland Tuesday.
VERNON-VERONA-SHERRILL 4, MT. MARKHAM 0
WEST WINFIELD, N.Y. — John Fewer scored four goals in the second half Saturday and the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Red Devils claimed the Mt. Markham Optimist Tournament championship with a 4-0 win over the host school.
The match was scoreless at halftime. Chris Watkins, Tim Beal and Logan Mumford each assisted on one of Fewer’s goals. Justin DuluitGaardens made three saves in the shutout for the Red Devils (3-0-0).
Mike Gras had nine saves for Mt. Markham (1-2-0). Gras was picked to the tournament’s all-star team along with teammates Matt Bleaking and Devan Palmer, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s Beal, Evan Chaires, Mumford and VanDuluitGaardens, Camden’s Sam Wright and Andrew Hill and Central Valley Academy’s Josh terry and Felipe Zenteno.
Fewer was the offensive most valuable player. Mt. Markham’s Jake Allen was the defensive MVP.
The Mustangs play at Owen D. Young Tuesday.

(West Canada Valley wins shootout)
NEWPORT, N.Y. — West Canada Valley won a shootout against Adirondack Saturday to earn a spot in the title match at its own kickoff tournament.
The teams played to a scoreless overtime tie and the Indians advanced with a 3-2 edge in penalty kicks.
Notre Dame of Utica defeated Canastota 3-2 in the other first-round match. Dara Chhit scored twice for the Jugglers and Colin Liddell had a goal and an assist. Avery Brennan scored the Canastota goal.
