A 61-year-old central New York accountant has pleaded guilty to stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars in other people’s money to pay debts and renovate his office.
The Utica Observer-Dispatch reports that Craig Podosek of Clayville pleaded guilty Wednesday in a Utica court to felony counts of grand larceny and scheme to defraud.
Prosecutors say the Utica accountant was treasurer for a church in the town of Paris when he stole about $380,000 from the organization in order to pay a personal debt. Then he bilked two clients out of thousands of dollars to pay back the church in what authorities referred to as a Ponzi-like scheme.
Podosek has already paid back some of the stolen money.
His sentence hasn’t been determined.
