  • The New York Army National Guard is deploying troops and aircraft to Texas for training as part of final preparations for duty in the Middle East.
Sixty soldiers and 10 Blackhawk helicopters of the 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade’s 3rd Battalion, 142nd Aviation based in suburban Albany depart Wednesday morning for Fort Hood. It’s the first wave of troops being sent to the Texas base over the next two weeks. In all, the deployment will include more than 450 soldiers and aircrews.
The brigade will train at Fort Hood before its eventual deployment to Kuwait at the end of the year.
The 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade headquarters last deployed in May of 2004 to Iraq and returned in November 2005. The unit supported flight operations across four provinces of north-central Iraq.
    • Also, the Department of Defense officials say they’re planning to deploy about 630 members of the 10th Mountain Division’s headquarters at Fort Drum to Afghanistan.
The 10th Mountain personnel are among six Army units to be deployed this winter as part of a rotation of forces in the war-torn country.
Army troops from Fort Campbell, Ky., Fort Carson, Colo., Fort Bliss, Texas, and Fort Bragg, N.C. also will be deployed and be part of the rotation of forces.
Tuesday’s announcement came the same day that 300 soldiers in the 1st and 2nd Brigade Combat Team arrived at Fort Drum from Afghanistan and as 2,000 members of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team start their deployment to the country.
The 10th Mountain has been among the most deployed units in the Army.
