LITTLE FALLS, N.Y. — It took nearly 70 minutes for either team to establish a lead Tuesday and the Little Falls Mounties made their single goal stand up for a 1-0 win against Herkimer’s Magicians. Both teams had been undefeated within Division II of the Center State Conference.
Kelli Shepardson set up the goal with a chip over the defense for Sarah Bruins on the left side. Bruins got behind the defense and sent a crossing shot along the ground to the right post with 11:03 on the clock to snap the scoreless tie.
Herkimer goalkeeper Chelsea Jory had repelled a Bruins charge less than one minute earlier. Jory charged out from the net, slid and kicked the ball away from Bruins who was on the attack from the opposite side. Jory then retreated to the post and positioned herself to bat away a follow-up shot from Casey Baumeister.
The Magicians’ best chance to tie the score came in the final five minutes of play. Little Falls was able to play the ball out of the box on a corner kick from the right of goalie Cheyenne Rivenburg and the Magicians were called offsides bringing the ball back in.
Rivenburg made five saves in the seventh shutout of the season for the Mounties (8-0-0, 4-0-0 CSC-II). Little Falls, which has allowed two goals all season, held an 18-13 edge in shots.
Jory made six saves for Herkimer (3-3-1, 3-1-0 CSC-II).
Herkimer had a chance to break through in the middle of the second half. Maddie Renshaw’s direct kick from 25 yards was on target but a Mountie defender deflected wide of the left post and over the end line. Rivenburg knocked the ball out of a crowd on the ensuing corner kick.
Three minutes later the Mounties came up empty on back-to-back corner kicks. Jory played the near post and knocked Maria Morotti’s initial kick over the end line. The second attempt was a repeat of the first with Jory again batting the ball but keeping it in play for her defense.
Morotti broke through the defense on a rush in the 66th minute and had her shot stopped by Jory who then dove to cover the rebound.
Morotti had hit the crossbar with a shot in the first half. The ball deflected straight down and was judged not to have crossed the goal line.
The Mounties play Thursday in Springfield Center against Owen D. Young. The Magicians’ next match is Tuesday at home against Frankfort-Schuyler.
