SAUQUOIT, N.Y. — Jason Nastovski ran for six touchdowns Friday in the undefeated Dolgeville Blue Devils’ 48-26 win over the Sauquoit Valley Indians.
Two quick Sauquoit Valley touchdowns put Dolgeville down 14-0 five minutes into the game but the Blue Devils converted four turnovers into touchdowns of their own. Dolgeville (4-0, 4-0 D East) led 21-20 at halftime and stretched the margin to 21 points early in the fourth quarter.
“The biggest thing was sticking to the game plan,” Dolgeville coach Dan Zilkowski said. “We knew that we could run the football on them We stuck with the plan and we were able to get back even and gain some confidence.”
Nastovski had an eight-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and tied the score at 14 with a two-yarder early in the second. Sauquoit Valley went back on top on the second of Korey Lewandrowski’s three touchdown passes but failed to convert on the extra point. Kasey Foster intercepted a pass from Lewandrowski and ran it back for the tying touchdown before Greg Pelan’s kick gave Dolgeville the lead at halftime.
Dolgeville committed its only turnover on the opening drive of the second half. A holding call negated a 69-yard touchdown run by Nastovski and Ethan Harris intercepted a pass from Reid Johnson two plays later. Sauquoit Valley took possession at Dolgeville’s 15-yard line but immediately gave the ball back on a snap over Lewandrowski’s head that was recovered by Austin Kollbeck. Nastovski capped a 36-yard scoring drive with a two-yard run and Dolgeville’s offense took the field again when Sauquoit Valley fumbled the ensuing kickoff back to the Blue Devils. A 33-yard drive ended with Nastovski running nine yards for his fourth touchdown on fourth-and-one.
“You talk about momentum swings,” Zilkowski said. “Going from from us scoring to them stopping us to us getting the ball back was very big.”
Nastovski’s one-yard touchdown and Johnson’s conversion pass to Johann Doerrer gave Dolgeville a 41-20 lead in the fourth quarter.
The sixth Nastovski touchdown came on a 20-yard run in the final minute of the game. The run put him over 200 yards as he finished with 204 on 29 carries.
Sauquoit Valley won the toss at the start of the game and took the ball. The Indians (2-2, 1-2 D East) took their initial lead on Jason Simon’s 46-yard touchdown run. They got the ball back following a punt and scored on the next play, a 53-yard Lewandrowski-to-Ethan Harris pass.
“They came out with a little more momentum and energy than we expected,” Zilkowski admitted.
Following the first Nastovski touchdown, the Indians fumbled the ball away near midfield, setting up the tying score.
Lewandrowski threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Zach Freeman in the second quarter and a six-yarder to Ethan Evans in the fourth. He completed 14 of the 22 passes he attempted and threw for 186 yards. Harris had eight catches for 138 yards and Simon ran for 127 yards on 14 carries.
