  • SHERBURNE, N.Y. — Section III’s highest-scoring offense did some self-destructing Friday night. The section’s best defense may have had something to do with that.
Sherburne-Earlville made one defensive stand after another, forced five turnovers, and junior quarterback Cody Marango threw touchdown passes to Ben Khoury and Gavin Giroux as the Marauders shut out Frankfort-Schuyler 14-0 in a showdown of Class C East unbeatens at Marauder Stadium.
It was Sherburne-Earlville’s third shutout, and the state-ranked No. 19 Marauders (4-0, 3-0 C East) have allowed just six points in four games.
Frankfort-Schuyler’s Maroon Knights (3-1, 3-1 C East), meanwhile, were averaging nearly 53 points per game, but they lost three first-half fumbles — all in Sherburne-Earlville territory — and the Marauders’ Brady Sopchak and Marango picked off fourth-quarter passes in the end zone.
Sopchak’s interception came on a fourth-and-eight halfback-option pass with 11:45 left. The Marauders then marched 83 yards to score the clinching touchdown sox minutes later.
Marango made his end zone pick with 3:43 left, and for the ninth straight possession, Frankfort-Schuyler stalled in Sherburne-Earlville territory. The Maroon Knights failed to score despite reaching the Sherburne-Earlville 6, 25, 28, 35, 30, 33, 44, 14 and 7.
Sopchak rushed for 92 yards on 17 carries, Brodie Roebuck added 67 yards on 10 carries, and fullback Garrett Duvall ran for 59 yards on 11 carries before leaving the game on a stretcher with an apparent knee injury with only 59 seconds remaining.
Mitchel Shortt rushed for 60 yards on 16 carries, Justin Kiesow ran for 59 yards on 10 carries, and Joe DeSarro — who had a 35-yard touchdown pass to Shortt nullified by a holding penalty in the first period — was 10 of 21 passing for 116 yards for Frankfort. Rich Morocco led Frankfort with six catches for 61 yards, and he also had an interception.
The Maroon Knights play a crossover game on the road Saturday against Dolgeville, another unbeaten opponent.
