  • POLAND, N.Y. — Abbey Mielnicki’s second goal broke a tie in the middle of the second half Thursday and the Sauquoit Valley Indians defeated Poland 2-1 in the season’s second meeting between Section III’s reigning champions for classes C and D.
Sauquoit Valley won by the same score on its home turf when the teams met Sept. 9.
“We want to play at a higher level,” said Tom Basel who coached Poland’s Tornadoes (5-2-0) to a Class D state championship last fall. “The only way to do that is to challenge yourselves.”
The score may have remained the same but Basel saw an improved Poland team from the one that lost in Sauquoit at the start of the season.
“Much better,” he said. “I just told them that. We still lost 2-1 but we owned possession for nearly 50 percent of the game and that’s crucial. It shows me that we’re stepping to the ball better.”
The first meeting went scoreless into the second half and Poland scored its goal late in the contest after falling behind 2-0. Thursday’s match saw each team put a goal on the board before halftime. Mielnicki scored first for Sauquoit Valley (7-1-0) and Mikayla Blumenstock countered with a goal assisted by Shelby Ossont for the Tornadoes.
Poland had the ball in the Sauquoit Valley end when the Indians broke out the other way in the second half. Mielnicki struck again with 17:27 on the clock, lifting a shot from the left side into the upper right corner of the goal to give her team the lead.
The Tornadoes had chances to tie, including a direct kick from within 25 yards that went wide of the right post. Blumenstock’s final run at the goal was broken up by a defender with 20 seconds left to play; the Indians kicked the ball out of bounds then controlled it on the throw-in and cleared it up the field while the final seconds were counted off.
Alyson Gaffney made five saves for Sauquoit Valley; Courtney Green had seven for Poland.
Nakeya Stedman and Kelly Brennan each assisted on one of Mielnicki’s goals.
Poland has a match Saturday against McGraw at Herkimer County Community College’s Wehrum Stadium.
