A 4-year-old girl was killed Wednesday after she fell from a second-floor window at her home in the village of Vernon, authorities said.
The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating how the girl fell before landing on a paved driveway at her home on Peterboro Street shortly before 6 p.m., Undersheriff Robert Swenszkowski said.
But at this point, the circumstances do not appear to be suspicious, he said.
The girl’s mother was home at the time, but their names are not yet being released publicly, Swenszkowski said.
Vernon police initially responded to the scene, and the girl was taken first to Oneida Healthcare Center before then being transported to University Hospital in Syracuse, where she was pronounced dead.
Because the incident involved a child fatality, Oneida County Department of Social Services contacted the Sheriff’s Office to assist in the investigation, Swenszkowski said.
“Due to the investigation and the fact it was a fatality, that’s all I can really offer at this point,” Vernon police Officer Christopher Green said Thursday.
