  • Joseph F. Sarafin, age 91, died on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica.
    He was born on March 19, 1922, in the town of Columbia, son of the late Martin S. and Mary Hugick Sarafin. He was raised on the family farm and was educated in Richfield Springs. Joseph was a lifelong dairy farmer in the town of Columbia. He enjoyed telling stories of farming powered first by horses, then tractors on steel.
    A member of Saint Joseph the Worker Parish, Richfield Springs, his belief in God never failed him. Also for over 60 years he was a member of Herkimer Elks Lodge No. 1439.
    Surviving him are three brothers, Charles Sarafin, of DeLand, Fla., John and wife, Clara Sarafin, of Herkimer, and Paul Sarafin and wife, Linda, of Jordanville; and five sisters, Marian Staruck and husband, Steve, of Jordanville, Martha Stark, of East Herkimer, Katherine Kryszczuk, of Utica, Genevieve Buddle and husband, Robert, of Richfield Springs and Anna Szeflinski, of Richfield Springs. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cousins. Family members passing before him include his parents; his sisters, Idaa and Emma; and brothers, Stanley, Leon and Martin.
    A Mass of Chrtistian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Saint Joseph the Worker Church, Richfeld Springs. Calling hours for Mr. Sarafin are on Tuesday from 4 until 6 p.m. in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 W. James St., Richfield Springs.
    Members of Herkimer Elks Lodge No. 1439 are asked to meet at the funeral home on Tuesday evening at 5:30 p.m. for ritualistic services.
    Memorial donations may be made to the Cedarville Volunteer Fire Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
