  • SCHOLASTIC FOOTBALL: Herkimer rolls to third straight win

  • EAST HERKIMER, N.Y. — Austin Mills threw four touchdown passes and ran for a score Friday as the herkimer Magicians rolled to their third consecutive victory.
    Mills figured in the scoring in the scoring on the first five touchdowns of Herkimer’s 47-0 win over the winless Cooperstown Hawkeyes. He completed seven of the 10 passes he attempted for 189 yards.
    The Magicians (4-1, 3-1 D East) reached the dimmed eastern end zone of their home field on the eighth pay of the game. Mills hit two passes, including a 26-yarder to Eric Johnston, and capped the drive with two runs, the last a one-yard plunge into the end zone.
    The first drive gave the malfunctioning bank of lights time to warm up and the field was completely illuminated in time for Mills to throw 57-yard touchdown pass to Johnston three minutes later.
    The Magicians struck again on the first play f the second quarter. A bad snap on a Cooperstown punt left Herkimer with possession at the Hawkeyes’ 21 and the Magicians advanced to the 14 before the end of the opening period. Brennen Thompson took a screen from Mills and scampered into the end zone at the start of the second quarter.
    Mills threw his last two touchdown passes to Zach Steele. Steele was on the receiving end of a 45-yard pass late in the first half and a 21-yarder early in the third quarter.
    Anthony Luppino and Josh Lamanna added touchdown runs in the second half.
    Linebacker Ryan Fahy led the defensive charge for the Magicians who recorded their second shutout of the season. Fahy had 10 tackles and a sack.
    Steele caught three passes for 72 yards, Johnston caught two for 92 and the Magicians ran for 175 yards as a team.
    Joseph Harmon intercepted a pass for Cooperstown (0-5, 0-5 D East).
    The Magicians, ranked 18th in the state in Class D, is home again Friday for a game against Waterville/Madison.
