  • Raymond “Pete” A. Baldwin, age 89, formerly of 15 Center St., Mohawk, and Prindle Apartments, Ilion, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, at Folts Homes, Herkimer, where he resided.
    He was born on July 2, 1924, in Pyrites, the son of James and Elizabeth (Farmer) Baldwin. Pete graduated from Mohawk High School and Utica College. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. On Aug. 9, 1952, he was married to Alice Byrnes at St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer. She died on Jan. 5, 2002. Pete owned and operated Pete’s Grocery Store on East Center Street in Mohawk from 1959 to 1979. He was later employed at Big M in Mohawk from 1981 to 1995. Mr. Baldwin was the oldest member of the Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post No. 25 of Mohawk. He was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk.
    Pete was well known for his sense of humor and great generosity. He enjoyed coaching Little League baseball in Mohawk for many years, was a proud veteran of the Greatest Generation, and was a devout Catholic.
    Survivors include his sister, Ruth Riel, of Mohawk; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his sister, Mae Loughlin; two brothers, Robert and James Baldwin; and his nephews, Robert Baldwin, Jr., and Michael Riel.
    Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, at Graves-Applegate-Day, Funeral Home, 4309 Acme Rd., Ilion, and 10 a.m. at the Blessed Sacrament Church, Mohawk, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Mark Cunningham, sacramental minister. Interment will be in Mohawk Cemetery.
    Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
    Members of Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post No. 25 of Mohawk will conduct ritual services on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013 at 5:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

    In lieu of flowers, as an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post No. 25 of Mohawk, in Pete’s name. Donation envelopes are available at the funeral home.
    All funeral and burial arrangements were prearranged and entrusted to funeral director Don Applegate.
