  • When Scott Campione returned home after life on the road as a professional wrestler with the now defunct World Championship Wrestling in 2001, his sister urged him to pick up the telephone and call East Coast Pro Wrestling to see if he could be added to a card at the Herkimer County Fairgrounds in Frankfort. “She said it would be great for me to perform in front of my family and friends after touring the country for so long,” Campione said during an interview Wednesday evening. “I picked up the phone, called the late Cousin Luke (Gene Petit) and asked if I could wrestle on the card. He said he had seen me on television and was familiar with my work, and he gave me a match. That was 12 years ago. Twelve years later, I’m still at it and I’m ready to enter the ring at the fairgrounds again. It’s going to be a memorable night.” The Frankfort resident is scheduled to defend his Northeast Championship title belt in a match against Andrew Anderson during an ECPW show at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. The card will also include appearances by Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka and Tito Santana, who will team against the Masked Superstars, and Tony Atlas, who will square off with Kraig Stagg in a singles match, as well as a 20-man battle royal as part of the three-day Central New York Gaming and Entertainment Expo at the Herkimer County Fairgrounds. “Snuka, Santana and Atlas are members of the WWE Hall of Fame and the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame in Amsterdam. They’re legends that wrestling fans remember,” said Campione. “It was 12 years ago at that show at the fairgrounds in Frankfort that I met Jimmy and we’ve been friends since. I’ve worked with Tito and Tony before, and I’m sure they’re going to give their all to entertain the fans who come out for the show.” The inaugural CNY Gaming and Entertainment Expo will get under way today at 4 p.m. and will include Madden NFL 25, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Halo 4, Gears of War 3, NBA 2K14, FIFA 14 and NHL 14 tournaments on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, laser tag and Magic: The Gathering tournaments, game shows, cosplay contests and an appearance by “Survivor” alumni John Dalton, who is better known as Johnny Fairplay. The event will also include music from more than 40 bands, including 9 Ball, Red Hush and Hollow Earth Theory on Friday, Cracked Alice, Revel 9 and North Carolina’s Blanco Diablo on Saturday and Tongue N Groove, Grit N Grace and Sirsy on Sunday. Friday’s activities will also include a foam party with DJ Skriminize, DJ Rose, DJ Whiteoute, DJ Omega, DJ Reese and DJ Distortion, as well as a meet and greet with Snuka from 7 to 9 p.m. There will also be a meet and greet with all of the wrestlers who will perform during the ECPW show at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. “The plans were to have the ring outside, but because of the weather forecast we’ve decided to move the ring inside one of the pavilions,” said Campione, adding the wrestlers will sign autographs and pose for pictures with fans during Saturday’s meet and greet. “Outside or inside, there’s no way I’m going to lose my title in Frankfort.” The gates for the CNY Gaming and Entertainment Expo will be open from 4 to 11 p.m. today, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. Admission will be $25, with $50 weekend passes available at Smashed Cow on Central Avenue in Ilion. Campione said the admission fee includes all of the day’s activities. “For $25 you can check out the expo, listen to some bands and take in a wrestling show,” said Campione. “Unlike the last few years when I’ve wrestled locally the show is closer to home. I’m excited for Saturday because it’s my hometown, my daughter Giovanna is going to escort me to the ring and my championship is on the line. I don’t know how many more matches I have left in me, so come out and support me.” For more information about this weekend’s event, including band and tournament schedules and a list of vendors, go to www.smashedcow.com.
