  • BOYS' SOCCER ROUNDUP: Win qualifies Mustangs for sectional playoffs

  • WEST WINFIELD, N.Y. — The Mt. Markham Mustangs qualified for the Section III playoffs Thursday by shutting Waterville out 3-0 in their final match of the regular season.
    The Mustangs (5-10-1, 4-5-1 CSC-III) led 1-0 at halftime after Matt Bleaking converted on a penalty kick. Kris Pontero scored the first of his two goals 29 seconds into the second half with an assist from Brady Wheelock. Jake Allen assisted on Pontero’s second goal.
    Mike Gras made nine saves in the shutout for Mt. Markham while Keith Prindle had six for Waterville (6-9-1).
    SPRINGFIELD CENTER, N.Y. — The Owen D. Young Wildcats ran out of daylight before the outcome of Thursday’s match against Hamilton/Morrisville-Eaton could be decided.
    The Wildcats and Emerald Knights settled for a 2-2 tie in a match that was halted after the first overtime period.
    Ben Knecht had a goal and an assist for Hamilton/Morrisville-Eaton (10-3-1, 9-0-1 CSC-III) which scored first and led 1-0 at halftime. Brian Meeks added a goal, Ryan Tuttle had an assist, and Lucas Ord recorded 10 saves.
    The Emerald Knights are ranked 14th in the state in Class C and handed Owen D. Young its only league loss at home earlier this fall.
    Matt Zylinski and Marty Collins scored for the Wildcats (11-2-1, 8-1-1 CSC-III) and Dustin Monk had an assist. Andrey Drozdov made seven saves.

    EAST HERKIMER, N.Y. — Dustin Bourgeois scored a goal 2 1/2 minutes into overtime Thursday and gave the Camden Blue Devils a 2-1 win against Herkimer’s Magicians.
    The teams were scoreless at halftime and Camden (3-12-0) struck first with Josh D’Angelis tallying a goal 1:37 into the second half.
    Dan Netti’s unassisted goal inn the 55th minute drew Herkimer (5-9-1) even on the scoreboard.
    Bourgeois volleyed the winning goal into the net with his head after a Herkimer defender had headed away the Blue Devils’ initial shot.
    Goalkeepers Austin Perry of Herkimer and Andrew Hill of Camden each made two saves.
    VERONA, N.Y. — John Fewer scored a pair of goals in the second half Thursday and led the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Red Devils to a 2-0 victory over West Canada Valley’s Indians.
    Tim Beal and Nick Metzger each assisted on one of Fewer’s goals for the Red Devils (12-4-0).
    Michael Sternberg had 16 saves for West Canada Valley (9-6-1) while Justin VanDuLuitgaarden had eight for Vernon-Verona-Sherrill.
