  • EAST HERKIMER, N.Y. — Two of the three teams that shared the Class D East title this fall will enjoy the comforts of home when the Section III playoffs begin next weekend. The third faces long ride for its quarterfinal game.
The Herkimer Magicians and West Canada Valley Indians, seeded third and fourth in an eight-team Class D field, will play home games while Dolgeville’s Blue Devils travel across the section for their opener. Dolgeville, the easternmost school in Section III, will send its team to Weedsport Friday to meet the undefeated No. 1 seed at the final Section III stop for westbound traffic on the New York State Thruway.
Herkimer, seeded third with its 6-1 overall record and 5-1 league mark, gets Tully (5-2, 4-1 D West) for its opponent Friday night with Alan Steele seeking his 100th coaching victory. The Magicians, winners of five consecutive games, are coming off back-to-back sectional titles after winning Class C-2 last year and an outright Class C title in 2011.
West Canada Valley (5-2, 5-1 D East) drew Sandy Creek (6-1, 5-1 D Central) for the 4-5 game and will play Saturday at 2 p.m. The Indians, outright Class D East champions one year ago, have won four consecutive games after a 2-3 start that included losses at home against Herkimer and on the road in a non-league game against Class C Lowville Academy.
Dolgeville, one of two wild-card entries, boasts the same 6-1/5-1 record as Herkimer — and a win against the Magicians — with its lone loss coming at home against West Canada Valley in Week 6. Weedsport is undefeated overall (7-0) and in Class D West (5-0).
The other Class D quarterfinal sends wild card Cato-Meridian (4-3, 3-2 D West) to Westmoreland (6-1, 6-0 D Central) for a game Saturday against the Class D Central champion and No. 2 seed.
Joining Weedsport as No. 1 seeds in brackets set at a meeting Sunday in Syracuse are Class AA Fayetteville-Manlius, Class A Indian River, Class B Homer and Class C Syracuse Institute of Technology.
Frankfort-Schuyler (5-2, 5-1 C East) drew the fourth seed in Class C and will play at home Friday against General Brown (6-1, 4-1 C North). Undefeated Class C East champion Sherburne-Earlville (7-0, 6-0 C East) is seeded second and plays at home Friday against Thousand Islands (4-3, 3-2 C North) while Utica’s Notre Dame Jugglers (4-3, 4-2 C East) drew a wild card and the No. 8 seed, earning a trip to Syracuse Friday for a game against the Institute of Technology (7-0, 6-0 C West).
The Section III finals will be played Nov. 9 and 10 in Syracuse University’s Carrier Dome.
In Section II, Fonda-Fultonville is the second seed from the Class C South and plays at home Saturday against Stillwater while Canajoharie is the No. 3 seed from Class D South and will play on the road against Salem in the quarterfinals.
Page 2 of 2 - The Week 8 crossover schedule has also been set for Section III’s non-qualifiers. Little Falls plays Friday night at Canastota. Central Valley Academy takes on Section II Granville Friday in Ilion. Mt. Markham is home Friday for its game against Cooperstown.
