  • FIELD HOCKEY: Herkimer earns bye into semifinals

  • SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Herkimer Magicians will have a week to prepare for the Section III playoffs after drawing the No 3 seed in a five-team Class D field Sunday.
    Herkimer heads to Rome’s RFA Stadium Saturday for a noon game against No. 2 Weedsport. The 2 p.m. game pits unbeaten top seed Morrisville-Eaton/Hamilton against the winner of Wednesday’s game between No. 5 Mt. Markham and No. 4 Sauquoit Valley.
    Cazenovia is once again the top seed in Class C and has the lone bye among seven teams. Little Falls, seeded third, plays at home Tuesday against Sherburne-Earlville with the winner playing Saturday’s 4 p.m. game in Rome against either Canastota or Holland Patent. Port Byron hosts Clinton in the other first-round game.
    Central Valley Academy is seeded at the bottom of a six-team Class B bracket and plays Wednesday at Cortland with the winner advancing to play Saturday against Camden. East Syracuse-Minoa is the top seed.
    The No. 1 seed in Class A is Fayetteville-Manlius which will host a semifinal doubleheader with all four qualifying teams Sunday.
    The finals doe classes A and B, as well as the Class C/D playoff, are scheduled for Nov. 2 in Rome. Classes C and D will crown their champions Oct. 30.
