  • SSG John J. Abeline (U.S. Army retired), age 66, of 5854 state Route 96, died at the Canandaigua VA Medical Center on Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, following an extended cancer illness.
    John was born in Herkimer on June 3, 1947, a son of the late Earl J. and Helen (Pratt) Abeline. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army for 23 years, until his retirement in 1992. John returned to the Herkimer area after many years abroad in the Army and began working for the Herkimer County Sheriff's Office and fire department. He made his home in Burdett for a number of years and, for the past three years, lived in Romulus. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, spending as much time as he could in the great outdoors.
    He is survived by his wife, Susan, of Romulus; a son, Kyle (Erika) Abeline, of Willard, and their daughters, Lexi and Bella; a sister, Micke Null, of Herkimer; his stepchildren, Kevin Snyder, of Avon, and Jill Snyder, of Cromwell, Md.; and a step-granddaughter, Crystal Snyder.
    The family will receive friends at Covert Funeral Home, 7199 S. Main St., Ovid, from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013. Military honors will be observed by the family at Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Romulus.
