  • BOYS' SOCCER: Mustangs upset Bishop Ludden

  • SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Mt. Markham Mustangs went on the road for the first round of Section III’s Class C playoffs Wednesday and defeated Syracuse’s Bishop Ludden Gaelic Knights 2-0.
    The win sends the Mustangs (6-10-1), who qualified for postseason play by beating Waterville 3-0 in their regular season finale Thursday, will travel to Newport Friday to meet West Canada Valley’s third-seeded Indians. Mt. Markham defeated West Canada Valley 2-1 in overtime in sectional play last fall.
    Seeded 11th in an 11-team Class C field, the Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the first half and shut the Gaelic Knights (7-7-2) out with Mike Gras making six saves.
    Devan Palmer and Ivan Delia each scored a goal for the Mustangs and Henry Feist contributed an assist.
    Matt Hughes made three saves for Bishop Ludden.
    Friday’s quarterfinal match kicks off at 3 p.m.
