  • Gloria E. Smith, 75, of Herkimer, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, at the Siegenthaler Center, New Hartford, with her loving family by her side.
    She was born Feb. 22, 1938, in Flint, Mich., the daughter of the late Donald and Ruby (Nordstrom) Martin. Gloria was a graduate of Dormont High School in Pittsburgh, Pa., and received her LPN degree through the Herkimer BOCES Adult Practical Nursing Program.
    At one time, she was married to the late John J. Smith.
    Mrs. Smith was last employed as a charge nurse for Valley Health Services in Herkimer. At one time, she worked for the Dr. Davidson's office in Ilion, Dr. Adaba's office in Frankfort and the former Ilion Hospital.
    Gloria's life revolved around her family, with the happiest time being in the company of her family, especially her loving grandchildren. She enjoyed being at home and visiting with her neighbors and friends.
    Survivors include her loving companion, Leighton Burns, of Herkimer; her beloved children, Stephen Smith and wife, Linda, of Pittsburgh, Pa., John Smith and wife, Kristin, of Ilion, and Lorraine Macrina and husband, Michael, of Herkimer; her seven cherished grandchildren, Matthew, Timothy, Nicole and Thomas Smith, and Michael, Jessica and Nicholas Macrina; an uncle, Charles Nordstrom, of Florida; and many cousins and friends.
    She was predeceased by her loving canine companions, Javert, Hans and Greta.
    Gloria's arrangements have been entrusted to the Vincent A. Enea Funeral Service, 329 S. Washington St., Herkimer (866-1500). Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, at 4 p.m. from the Petykiewicz, Iocovozzi and Burns Funeral Home, 329 S. Washington St., Herkimer. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013, from 2 p.m. until the time of the services.
    In keeping with Gloria's wishes, interment will take place privately and at the convenience of the family at the Mohawk Cemetery.
    In lieu of flowers, please make all memorial contributions to the Forgotten Friends Pet Rescue, Inc., 6930 State Route 10, Sharon Springs, NY 13459. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
    The family would like to express their sincere thank you to the nurses and staff of the Siegenthaler Center for the care shown to Gloria during her stay.
