  • SCHOLASTIC FOOTBALL: CVA ends first season with win

  • ILION, N.Y. — The Central Valley Academy Thunder capped its inaugural season with a 34-7 win over Holland Patent Wednesday at Diss Memorial Field.
    The Thunder (5-4) won its final three games and scored 130 points during that streak. Central Valley Academy also snapped a three-game winning streak for Holland Patent (5-4) in the process.
    Mykel Farley carried the ball the ball 14 times for 200 yards and three touchdowns in helping the Thunder build a 34-0 lead. Farley, a senior from Ilion, finished his scholastic career with 835 yards and 11 touchdowns in his final three games, wins against South Jefferson, Albany and Holland Patent.
    Tyler Brown added a 10-yard touchdown run for Central Valley Academy and Travis Mead recovered a blocked punt in the end zone, marking the second time this season the Thunder scored on such a play.
    Ryan Sponburgh, one of 18 Central Valley Academy ball-carriers, ran for 53 yards on his seven attempts. Defensively, Mark Brough recorded seven tackles to go with three sacks and three players — Gavin Goldsmith, Zach Crim and Mitchell Werenczak — intercepted passes.
    Holland Patent avoided being shut out when David Meola ran 81 yards for a touchdown in the final period.
