  • ROME, N.Y. — The Sandy Creek Comets’ season continues along the same path it did last year. For Dolgeville, the 2013 season ended much like 2012.
Sandy Creek, Section III’s defending Class D champion, is heading back to the Carrier Dome after beating Dolgeville 24-12 Friday at RFA Stadium. The Blue Devils’ 2012 season also ended with a loss to the Comets.
Tyler Swarthout ran for three touchdowns for Sandy Creek (8-1) and broke a 12-all tie when he plowed his way across the goal line with 8:37 let in the fourth quarter. Zach Brown all but sealed the win five minutes later when he took a handoff on third-and-10 from near midfield and sprinted 46 yards for the final Sandy Creek touchdown.
The teams traded touchdowns in the first quarter — a nine-yard screen pass from Reid Johnson to Devin Coonradt got Dolgeville on the board first; Swarthout ran 16 yards for the first of his touchdowns — and the game remained tied at 6 until late in the third quarter.
Sandy Creek took advantage of a turnover to get the lead for the first time. Victor Halverson recovered a fumble at Dolgeville’s 4-yard line and two runs by Swarthout produced the touchdown that put the Comets up 12-6. Aided by a long Johnson-to-Johann Doerrer pass and a facemask call against the Comets, Dolgeville (7-2) drove down the field and tied the score on Nastovski’s two-yard touchdown run on the final play of the third quarter. Dolgeville had a chance to take the lead but Doerrer’s kick was blocked and the teams remained tied at 12.
All six point-after kicks failed during the game; three were blocked, two by the Blue Devils.
Sandy Creek beat Dolgeville 28-21 in the Class D quarterfinals last fall. The Comets led that game 28-7 at the start of the fourth quarter before Dolgeville scored twice and got the ball back with a chance to tie.
The Comets went on to beat Westmoreland in the 2012 title game. There will be no rematch after Herkimer defeated the Bulldogs 29-20 in Friday’s other semifinal. Sandy Creek and Herkimer will play for the 2013 championship Friday at 5 p.m.
