  • WEST WINFIELD — Douglas E. Doremus was called home on Saturday, November 2, 2013, at Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare with his family by his side.
    Doug was one of 15 children born to Eugene and Ida Doremus on November 2, 1952. He was raised on the family farm in Cedarville, NY, and educated at the West Winfield School System. Doug enlisted in the Army in 1968. In 1970, he married Kathy Kiley and the couple moved to Germany, where their first child, Peggy was born in 1971. In 1972, they returned to the USA, where their two sons’ were born, Curt in 1973 and James in 1975.
    Doug worked at Remington Arms for 33 years while farming until he was able to retire and follow his life long dream of being a full time farmer. Doug milked cows and raised a variety of animals. The dearest to his heart were his horses which he loved to just sit outside and watch. He ran his family farm for 40 years, until ALS took over and he was forced to sell his milk cows. Doug was able to keep some animals on the farm with the thanks to his friends and family who all pitched in to keep a smile on Doug’s face. Doug enjoyed getting on his scooter and roaming around out back on his farm to admire the land and animals with his favorite canine companion Bell.
    Anyone who knew Doug knew he was stubborn as a mule and tough as an ox.
    Doug leaves behind his wife of 43 years, Kath; daughter, Peggy Tennaal and her husband, Matt, two grandkids, Lexi and Zack; son Curt Doremus and his girlfriend, Tammy; two grandsons, Douglas and Dawsyn; son, Jim Doremus and his girlfriend Jackie; six grandchildren, Ashley, Quinton, Tommy, Maggie, Samantha and Johnathan; brothers, Keith and his wife, Pat, of Cedarville, Eugene and his wife, Mary of Cedarville, Arthur, and his partner, Thomas, of Cedarville, Fred and his wife, Judy, of Mohawk, Roy and his wife, Cheryl, of Cedarville, Carl and his partner, Darryl, of NH, Dennis and his wife, Wan Pen, of NC; sisters, Ruth Hanranhan, of Rome, Margie Creaser, of Westmoreland, Jane Rood and her husband, Milford, of Cedarville, Betty Helmer and her husband, Albert, of Ilion, Sherry Bouck and her husband, John, of Sherrill, Karen Allen, and her husband, John, of Fairfield. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews’ cousins and close friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Eugene and Ida and a brother, Terry.
    The family would like to give a special thank you to Doug’s special friends for all the care and compassion and being there through the thick and thin and they are Becky and Eric Evans and their sons, Dillon, Mathew and Michael; Brian and Angela Lynch and her daughter, Gaby; Carrie Trevor, Fred Herron, Richard Herron, Robert Miller, Roger Crossett, Donald Shipman, Bernie Shipman and Wayne Sullivan.
    Page 2 of 2 - Following Doug’s wishes there will be no calling hours. A celebration of Doug’s life will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at 1:00 at the West Winfield Fire Hall.
