  • NORWICH, N.Y. — The Poland Tornadoes are heading back to Cortland to compete for another state championship next weekend. Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville’s Wolves and Canajoharie’s Cougars will not be joining them.
The Tornadoes, New York’s reigning Class D champions, punched their return ticket to the Final Four with a 4-0 shutout of Section IV champion Milford at Norwich High School Saturday. Sophomore striker Mikayla Blumenstock had a hat trick for Section III Poland (17-2-0) and Tara Seigle scored the other goal. Courtney Green (one) and Claire Lepper (*two) combined to make three saves in the shutout.
Poland’s semifinal opponent will Eldred of Section IX after the Yellowjackets edged Section II champion Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville 2-1 at Middletown High School. Jessi Hagadorn scored first for the Wolves but Eldred tied the match before halftime and notched the winning goal late in the second half.
The other Class D semifinal features Section VII Chazy and Section V Jasper-Troupsburg.
Canajoharie, a first-time Section II champion, was beaten 3-1 by Section VII Northern Adirondack in its Class C regional in Plattsburgh; Hannah Bowerman scored on a direct kick for the Cougars to tie the score at 1 early in the second half.
The rest of the Class C Final Four includes undefeated Section IV champion Lansing, a regional winner over Beaver River from Section III, Section I Haldane, which advanced in a regional shootout, and Section VI Holland, Northern Adirondack’s semifinal opponent.
Sites have yet to be announced for Saturday’s semifinals which will be spread among Cortland and Homer high schools, SUNY-Cortland and Tompkins-Cortland Community College. The Class C matches are set for 9:30 a.m. and the Class D contests will start at noon.
    More to come.
