  • ABC is taking a second swing at breaking into the lucrative reality singing competition genre.
The network has ordered 10 episodes of Rising Star, based on the popular Israeli talent competition of the same name, Deadline reports. The series will premiere this summer.
    Surprising celebrity ties
Rising Star broke ratings records when it debuted this past fall in Israel. The format has since been sold in France, Germany, Italy and Russia, and the UK's ITV could be next.
The live talent show incorporates real-time voting by viewers through an app that is fully integrated into the show. Unlike reality staples like American Idol and The Voice, which both start their seasons with taped auditions, Rising Star is live from the very beginning. Contestants audition with live performances, and viewers are able to vote for their favorite performers during every round during the performances. Those votes, along with the judges' feedback, determines whether the singer stays in the competition.
The best and worst TV reboots
In addition to real-time voting, Rising Star also takes advantage of technology during the performances, in which contestants are separated from the judges and studio audience by an LED screen that displays images of voters at home. Contestants can also see how fast (or slow) the vote tally is growing during their performance to allow for lightning-fast feedback.
ABC's most recent attempt at a singing competition - Duets - lasted just one season in the summer of 2012.
