  • ALBANY — The $99.7 million project to add a third lane in each direction on the Thruway between its two Albany exits has been completed.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday that is “great news” for those who drive daily in the busy 6.25-mile corridor between uptown and downtown Albany.
There have been special driving restrictions and frequent state police speed traps during construction.
Builders also replaced the old pavement, added 12 water storage ponds for drainage and erected eight sections of noise barriers.
Project design was completed in late 2010 and construction began in March 2011. Rifenburg Construction of Troy was the prime contractor.
Officials said there may be occasional short-term lane closures as cleanup is completed.
