  • ILION — While learning baking and job-readiness skills, some Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES students are doing their part to help out the community — one dog biscuit at a time.
Herkimer BOCES teacher Erica Haver has been showing her students how to make dog biscuits in four of her classes at the BOCES Pathways Academy at Remington — three family and consumer science classes and one service industry class.
At a recent conference of family and consumer science classes, teachers decided to split up the humane societies in the area and make dog biscuits to give to the organizations. Another school is helping the Herkimer County Humane Society, so Haver’s classes are providing their dog biscuits to Stevens-Swan Humane Society in Utica.
“This is one way to help donate,” Haver said.
Making the dog biscuits also was part of the Pathways Academy’s goal of helping students become more aware of what job opportunities are available in the region, Haver said. Students in the program learn information under career clusters such as health sciences, human services, manufacturing, agriculture and food and natural resources, she said.
Haver and her students talked about humane societies, and the potential for working at a humane society or in a similar job, she said.
Additionally, students learned some skills that could help prepare them for a variety of jobs, she said. They learned how to follow the recipe, double the recipe, bake, track the inventory and do other related tasks.
“There’s a lot of mixing, measuring, rolling,” she said.
Student Shailynne Hoag, a sophomore of Owen D. Young, said she has a dog, so it feels “good” to help out by making the dog biscuits.
    “I like dogs,” she said.
Student Amanda Davis, a senior of Herkimer, said making biscuits for dogs at the Stevens-Swan Humane Society is a good cause.
“It’s good to help them out,” she said. “The dogs don’t have homes, and they try to find homes for them.”
