  • Though Crazy Eyes (Uzo Aduba) and Taystee (Danielle Brooks) are often cited as Orange Is the New Black's biggest scene stealers, we hold a special place in our heart for Lorna Morello (Yael Stone). There's just something about the delusional van driver and her bizarre (Boston? Brooklyn?) accent that is completely endearing, even when she's insisting on the validity of "knifes" as a word.
But beyond these few things, we barely know Morello. Thankfully, Stone says that will change when the second season premieres on Netflix in 2014. "For all of the characters, there really is a flowering of detail. So that's a really exciting thing that's happening. We're learning a lot of little secrets and I think people will enjoy it," Stone tells TVGuide.com.
Laura Prepon may be returning to OITNB for more than one episode after all
This will hopefully include more details about Morello's tumultuous love life. After trying out an intense gay-for-the-stay romance with Nicky (Natasha Lyonne), Morello cut off their relationship to honor her fiancé Christopher, though he has yet to visit her since three weeks into her 34-month sentence. Yet even after Nicky called out Christopher's lack of dedication in Season 1, Morello wasn't ready to face the truth. So will things be any different moving forward? "There's definitely some facing of things," Stone teases. "I don't know if it's reality. Sometimes reality is hard to define. Especially where Lorna's concerned."
Stone remains tight-lipped on whether we'd get to see of Morello's backstory this season, but she does reveal that she created her own - very inaccurate - character history while filming the first season. "Yeah, that was the worst idea ever," she says with a laugh. "I didn't know what Lorna was in prison for. There was really a lot of invention going on for me and being a theater person I was up writing these biographies, and then someone would be like, 'Actually, that is completely wrong.'"
So what did Stone's version entail? "I think initially I had written a crazy story that may or may not have involved some violent assault," she says. But those who paid close attention to one of Big Boo's (Lea Delaria) burns in Episode 6 know Morello supposedly landed in the clink due to internet auction fraud.
Page 2 of 2 - As for Morello's love life, Stone is hoping that she'll reconcile with Nicky, but isn't making any promises. "My fingers are crossed. I miss that girl," she says. "I have the most fun in the world with Natasha. She's pretty incredible and definitely playing with her during the day is pretty incredible." Though, as Lyonne previously explained, for the couple to get back together Morello would need to start "treating [Nicky] like an equal human being" and we doubt Morello will be be mature enough for that anytime soon. (We'd just be happy if she knew enough not to call it Bora Bora Bora.)
Orange Is the New Black Season 2 to focus less on Piper
Season 2 will also find Morello's world expanding as she starts to interact with people outside her "tribe," notably fan-favorite Crazy Eyes. "I had my first scene one-on-one with Uzo and that was really lovely," Stone says. "Obviously the show is so racially divided that often you're like you stay with your gang. You don't get to do a lot of stuff. But as the season goes on we get to interact in different ways."
Though the inter-prison relationships will be evolving as OITNB goes on, one thing that's sure never to change is Morello's devotion to West Side Story, something the actress now shares. "I love that film. I really think it's kind of genius having re-watched it," Stone says. "And having had a sit-down with Michael Trim, who's a really important part of Orange and directed a lot of the episodes, I was so moved hearing him talk about his first experience watching that as a teenager. It means a lot to me now surprisingly enough."
