  • SPAFFORD — A central New York dairy farm expects to save $30,000 a year on its electric bill with its new solar panels, installed for about $900,000 including a state grant.
Fesko Dairy in Spafford recently installed about 1,000 solar panels on a little more than an acre. The solar array is expected to generate 303 kilowatts of electricity, about 80 percent of what the 600-cow dairy uses in a year.
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority provided a $368,000 grant for the project.
The farm is about 15 miles southwest of Syracuse near Skaneateles Lake. It had first planned to build a windmill for electricity. But it scrapped that plan because residents of the scenic area thought it would mar the view.
