  • ILION — Sophia K. Reynolds, 96, formerly of Clark Place, died on Nov. 23, 2013, at Mohawk Valley Health Care Center, where she had resided since 2010.
    Mrs. Reynolds was born on April 19, 1917, in Herkimer, a daughter of the late John and Frances (Dadaj) Klys. She graduated from Herkimer High School. On April 29, 1939, Sophia was united in marriage with George Reynolds at St. Joseph's Church, Herkimer. Sophia was first employed as a clothing spotter at Prine Cleaners, formerly of Ilion. She later worked as a clerk at A&P Grocery Store in Ilion until it closed in 1972 and was co-owner of Reynolds Drapery Service, Newport, from 1970 to 1974. Sophia traveled extensively after her retirement, visiting several European countries as well as Australia and New Zealand. She especially enjoyed her trips to the Hawaiian Islands with her friends and to Alaska and the Florida Keys with family. Sophia was a devout Catholic and a member of the Church of the Annunciation, Ilion.
    Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Kit, of Santa Clara, Calif., Robert and Jean and Richard and Pat, all of Newport, and Roger and Karen, of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Mary Hufnail, of Mooresville, N.C., and Helen Arca, of Felt Mills; two granddaughters, Kim (John) Lawson and Julie (Marcus) Reynolds, and five great-grandchildren, Bailen and Mina Lawson, Zachary, Ellie and Luke Reynolds, all of California; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, two brothers, John and Joseph Klys; a granddaughter, Brenda Hughes; and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law predeceased her.
    The family wishes to thank the third floor staff at MVHCC for the care and compassion shown to Sophia during her time there, as well as the Ilion ambulance crews who kindly assisted her over the years.
    A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Church of the Annunciation, Ilion, on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Paul Catena, pastor, officiating and assisted by Deacon James Bower. In accordance with Sophia's wishes, her remains were donated to Albany Medical College for medical research. There are no calling hours and inurnment will take place at Calvary Cemetery, Herkimer, at a later time.
