  • GIRLS' BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Herkimer wins first game at Section II/Section III Challenge

  • FORT PLAIN, N.Y. — The Herkimer Magicians raced out to a 15-0 lead Friday and defeated Berne-Knox-Westerlo 59-31 at the Fort Plain’s Section II/Section III Challenge for their first win of the season.
    Chelsea Jory scored 15 points to lead three players in double figures for the Magicians. Hannah DeLude added 13 points and Maxine Grogan had 11 while McKenzie Pine chipped in with eight. Grogan went 7-for-11 at the foul line while Herkimer shot 17-for-29 as a team.
    Monique Britton was Berne-Knox-Westerlo’s high scorer with 11 points.

    FORT PLAIN, N.Y. — Haley Kilmartin and Abby Boyer combined to score 31 points Friday in the Fort Plain Hilltoppers’ 45-35 win over Waterville at the Section II/Section III Challenge.
    Kilmartin, who sat out Fort Plain’s season-opening one-point loss to Mayfield, scored 14 points while Abby Boyer, her Western Athletic Conference North Division co-most valuable player last winter, had a game-high 17. The Hilltoppers took a 16-7 lead in the opening period but saw the margin cut to five points at halftime.
    Alexis Decker scored 17 points for Waterville, a newcomer to the annual event.

    RICHFIELD SPRINGS, N.Y. — Cherry Valley-Springfield led by 21 points at halftime Friday on its way to a 49-24 win over Sharon Springs at the Richfield Springs Sports Booster Club’s annual tip-off tournament.
    The win set up Saturday’s final against Richfield Springs, a 54-29 winner against Edmeston Thursday.
    Cherry Valley-Springfield’s Patriots scored 20 points in the first quarter and led 31-10 at the break. They outscored the Spartans by 10 points in the third quarter to stretch the margin past 30.
    Lauren Loucks led the patriots with 13 points while Maddie Archer scored 11.
    Nobody scored more than six points for Sharon Springs.
