A 59-year-old Herkimer County man was killed Monday night while he was using an agricultural tractor to remove scrap metal from his property, state police said.
Wayne Johnson Sr., of 102 Johnson Road, was attempting to dismantle and clear scrap metal from his property at about 7 p.m. Monday in the town of Schuyler using a Ford tractor equipped with a bucket, police said.
Johnson was using a chain attached to the bucket to secure a large piece of scrap metal when he stepped between the bucket and the scrap metal, police said. The tractor then rolled forward, causing the bucket to come down on top of Johnson.
Johnson remained pinned there for an undetermined amount of time until he was discovered by a passing motorist, police said.
Johnson was removed from the scene by the Schuyler Fire Department and transported to St. Elizabeth Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, police said. An autopsy will be performed on a later date by the Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office in Syracuse.
