  • GIRLS' BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Poland knocks off reigning sectional champ Oriskany

  • POLAND, N.Y. — The Poland Tornadoes opened league play Monday with a 47-44 win over Oriskany, Section III’s two-time defending Class D champion.
    Oriskany beat the Tornadoes three times last year and went unbeaten through the regular season and sectionals.
    Poland (3-1, 1-0 CSC-IV) fell behind in the first quarter but outscored the Redskins (1-1, 0-1 CSC-IV) 12-2 in the second and led by four points at halftime. The margin was two entering the fourth quarter.
    Shiane Irwin scored 13 points to lead the Tornadoes while Page Sullivan had 11.
    Madison Zizzi scored 18 points in the loss for Oriskany. Jordan Sahl added 14.
    Poland’s next game is Saturday at Mt. Markham.
