  • SAUQUOIT, N.Y. — Marissa Jones scored her only basket with 25.7 seconds left in the fourth quarter and gave Sauquoit Valley the final lead Monday in the Indians’ 47-46 win over the Mt. Markham Mustangs.
There were 12 lead changes and nine ties in a game that never saw either team lead by more than six points. The teams traded leads seven times in the third quarter alone.
Mt. Markham (2-3, 1-2 CSC-III) took the lead for the last time with 4:30 left in the third quarter and held it until the final minute of the game. Sauquoit Valley took the lead on a pair of free throws by Jordan Talma with 48.5 seconds on the clock; the teams had combined to miss 11 of the first 13 foul shots of the fourth quarter and endured a six-minute stretch without a field goal.
A short jumper by Nadine Waite ended the field goal drought and brought the Mustangs even at 45. Sauquoit Valley (1-3, 1-2 CSC-III) went back on top on Jones’ basket at the other end; Brianne Cardillo missed the Indians’ initial shot, Morgan Talma missed on a putback and the second rebound fell to Jones who had one previous point in the game.
Heather Curtin made one of a pair of free throws for Mt. Markham to make it a one-point game at the 14.8-second mark. The Mustangs stole the ball three times as Sauquoit Valley struggled to get it in bounds but the visitors were unable to score off the first two turnovers and the third came as time expired.
Cardillo had 18 points and Morgan Talma had 15 rebounds for Sauquoit Valley. Samantha Critelli had 10 points and eight rebounds.
Morgan Westbrook scored 15 points and Bryn Hoover had 11 for Mt. Markham.
