  • PERU — Bloated Toe Publishing of Peru announced the release of a new true crime title, “Killing in the Kuyahoora Valley,” by award-winning author Lawrence P. Gooley.
The 126-page book sells for $18 and chronicles the story of Poland schoolteacher Lydia Beecher, who was murdered in 1914 by student Jean Gianini. This was the first murder of a New York state schoolteacher, and introduced a landmark defense — not guilty by reason of imbecility — which thereafter became commonplace. The book is now available from Bloated Toe’s North Country Store, online at http://www.bloatedtoe.com/store/.
Gooley has authored 16 books on Adirondack history, including regional best-seller “Terror in the Adirondacks: The True Story of Serial Killer Robert F. Garrow” and “Oliver’s War: An Adirondack Rebel Battles the Rockefeller Fortune,” which won the 2007 Adirondack Literary Award for Best Book of Nonfiction. A chapter in his recent book, “25 Diabolical Adirondack Murders: The Twisted, Fiendish Deeds of North Country Killers,” was featured on the Discovery Channel special, “Bloody Marys.”
