  • Rome Mayor Joseph Fusco has appointed Oneida County Attorney Gregory Amoroso to the city's part-time judge post.
The seat was vacated after the part-time judge, John Gannon, was elected to the full-time judge position over attorney Joseph Mellace in November. Gannon will take over for Judge Dan Wilson, who retires at the end of this month.
Amoroso will need to seek election in November 2014.
"I am very pleased to appoint Gregory Amoroso as judge to the Rome City Court," Fusco said in a news release. "Greg possesses impeccable legal credentials and has a passion for serving our community."
Amoroso previously served as the city's corporation counsel from 1997 to 2002; as a partner at Saunders, Kahler L.L.P.; and as counsel to state Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-Rome. A 1993 graduate of Syracuse University College of Law, Amoroso has been a practicing attorney since 1994.
"My public sector experience has taught me invaluable lessons about the city of Rome and the needs of its residents," Amoroso said in the release. "It will be an honor to serve as a Rome City Court judge, and I thank Mayor Fusco for his trust and confidence in me."
Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente said he is sorry to lose Amoroso, but that he will "make a great judge."
"He is very thorough and objective and has done a really great job," Picente said.
Amoroso has served as chairman of the Young Lawyers of the New York State Bar and on the boards of the Oneida County Bar Association and the Rome Bar Association. He also is a past board member of the Rome Industrial Development Corp. and served as treasurer on the board of the Rising Stars Soccer Club of Central New York.
The lifetime Roman lives in the city with his wife, Susan, and their two children.
Picente said he will have an announcement about Amoroso's successor Monday.
