  • PINE BUSH — Snowmobile trails are beginning to open, and the New York State Snowmobile Association is reminding riders to practice safe snowmobiling practices.
Chief among them: Check with local clubs for trail statuses, respect trail signage and remember that warmer weather can affect riding conditions.
“While it has been cold and we’ve seen plenty of snow over the past few days, warmer weather will mean there will likely be soft spots and water holes on trails,” Dominic Jacangelo, executive director of NYSSA, said in a news release. “We’d like to remind snowmobilers to use early season riding caution in the coming days, and to follow our main safety tips for an enjoyable and safe riding experience.”
Snowmobilers can visit www.nysnowmobiler.com for information on state clubs and details on how to register sleds with the DMV.
NYSSA also offers the following safety tips:
    • Do not consume any alcohol or drugs before or during a ride.
    • Respect landowners' wishes; obey posted signs and stay on the marked trail.
    • Ride within your ability; operate at a safe and prudent speed at all times.
    • Stay to the right, share the trail, and yield to groomers.
    • Be prepared for changing trail and weather conditions.
    • Obey state laws with respect to snowmobiling.
    • Always ride with another snowmobiler.
