MARATHON — John L. Snyder, 61, of Marathon, passed away Dec, 19, 2013, with his family by his side. His battle was long and he fought it like a true warrior.
He was predeceased by his parents, C. Laurie and Alice Snyder; brother-in-law, Jim Cooley, who was like a brother to him; and father-in-law, Steve Hanzlik. He is survived by his wife, Lillian, and son, Andrew; sister, Tiz; brothers, Pete and Dena, Steve and Virginia and Mike and Jackie; nephews, David and Cory, Michael and Dawn, Brad and Norma, Todd and Sue, Scott and Jill and Matt; nieces, Sarah, Liz, Allison and Sarah; mother-in-law, Mary; sisters-in-law Rita, Alice and Theresa; brothers-in-law, Mike and Bill; and many friends and extended family.
John served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam war and was a retired employee from SUNY Binghamton. John was a devoted family man and a great outdoorsman. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening, playing cards and the occasional road trip to local gambling establishments. Often times, he could be seen outside putting his “plan” in motion with regards to the garden, and many people enjoyed the fruits of his labor. He was always up for an adventure and loved to travel, especially in “The Unit.” His greatest memories were those of his cruises, and his trips to Raquette Lake and Matane with his family. His sense of humor and quick wit were loved by all who knew him. His conviction and dedication could be seen with “the chin.” He had a good heart, going out of his way to make everyone feel welcomed and would do anything for his family and friends. Once you met John, you would surely never forget him.
At John’s request, there will be no calling hours. There will be a private celebration of his life in the spring, his favorite time of year. Family and friends will be notified. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider organ or blood donations.
